Health Care

Overview of VA health care

Other than Honorable (OTH) discharge? You may qualify for VA medical benefits.

VA provides world-class health care to eligible Veterans, including those with Other Than Honorable discharge status. You may be eligible for care for certain health issues related to your military service. Medical and mental health services may include outpatient care, inpatient services, residential care, and telehealth services. You may also be eligible for counseling at a VA Vet Center.

Apply now for health care, and while your application is being reviewed, VA may treat you for:

  • Your VA-rated service-connected disability
  • Any conditions related to sexual assault or sexual harassment experienced during your service
  • Mental or behavioral health, if you served at least 100 days in the military and served in a combat theater or piloted a drone in a combat theater
  • Any mental health issues related to your service if you’re in distress or crisis

Discharge Upgrade

You can also request a discharge upgrade at the same time you apply for VA health care, as it could make you eligible for additional benefits. All branches of the military consider you to have a strong case for a discharge upgrade if you can show your discharge was connected to any of these categories:

  • Mental health conditions, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Sexual assault or harassment during military service (at VA, we refer to this as military sexual trauma or MST)
  • Sexual orientation (including under the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy)
